YouTube Advertising Basics

Running a series of YouTube ads is a way to get your message in front of a large number of people in your target audience and to get people interested in your business. YouTube has over 2 billion logged-in viewers a month so it’s worth considering as part of your advertising strategy. While YouTube’s audience may be slightly smaller than the 2.74 billion active users on Facebook, a lot of people visit YouTube without ever logging in, so the actual number of users may be much higher.

The Cost of Advertising on YouTube

The cost of ads on YouTube is based on views, which typically cost between $0.10 and $0.30 depending on your keywords and niche. You’re in control of your budget so it’s up to you to decide how much to spend. If you set a daily budget, Google only charges you up to that amount.

You do need a Google account to advertise on YouTube, so you’ll set up and run your ads through your Google Ads account. You’ll also need a YouTube channel so that you can upload your video ad to it before you set up a campaign. Keywords on YouTube tend to be less expensive than on Google, so advertising on YouTube is a cost-effective way to provide engaging video or audio that targets your audience.

Types of YouTube Video Ads

There are several different types of ads you can run on YouTube. The main types include:

  • Skippable in-stream ads – These play before, during, or after a video, and the user can choose to skip it in 5 seconds. You pay if the user watches past 30 seconds or to the end of the video or clicks. Your ad should be under 3 minutes and at least 12 seconds long.
  • Non-skippable in-stream ads – These are pre-roll or mid-roll ads that don’t have a skip button. This may be a good option if you’re confident you can hold a prospect’s attention for 15 seconds since many people automatically skip ads.
  • Bumper videos – These are 6 seconds long and play before a video.
  • Video discovery ads – These ads show up on YouTube’s home page and search results page.

If you don’t have a budget for video, you can also run non-video ads. These include display ads on the right-hand sidebar, which contain text and an image. Another option is in-video overlay ads which is a banner ad that shows at the bottom of a video.
